GEO and AI SEO for dentists
When a patient asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI for a family dentist nearby, the answer names a handful of practices and leaves the rest out. Generative engine optimization (GEO) for dentists is the work of getting your practice onto that short list. DDSRank does it for dental practices only, built on the SEO work your site already needs.
Turn AI answers into booked dental appointments
GEO for dentists means making your practice easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend. When a patient asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode for a dentist taking new patients, the assistant runs its own web searches, reads what comes back and writes a short list of names. Whether your practice makes that list depends on what the assistant can find and read about you.
Patients already use these tools for health questions. Rock Health’s 2025 survey of 8,000 US adults found that 32% had used an AI chatbot for health information, up from 16% a year earlier. Of those users, 40% went on to consult a provider. Separately, Pew reported in June 2026 that 44% of US adults use ChatGPT, up from 34%.
If you have open appointments to fill, those are patients you want the assistants to send your way.
Maybe you already pay for dental SEO, but…
Your website may rank well. Your Google Business Profile may have hundreds of good reviews, and an agency may send you a report every month. None of that tells you what ChatGPT says when someone in your town asks it for a dentist.
Ranking on Google and being named by an AI assistant overlap, but they aren’t the same result. An assistant builds its answer from what it can read about you on your own site and in the directories it uses. A gap in either place can leave you off the list, even when your rankings look healthy.
We get it, you want to know whether AI is sending patients somewhere else
You may be asking some of these:
- Does ChatGPT actually recommend dentists by name?
- Is the SEO I’m paying for already covering this?
- Do I need a special AI file on my website?
- How would I find out what AI says about my practice?
That’s why DDSRank is here
We do GEO for dental practices, and we start by showing you where you stand:
- What the assistants say. What ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answer when a patient in your area asks for a dentist, and which practices they name instead of yours.
- What they read. The pages and directories each assistant uses to build that answer, and which details about your practice are missing or don’t match.
- What to fix first. A plan for your website, your Google Business Profile and your listings, in the order that matters for your market.
What Google says about GEO for dentists
A lot of what gets sold as AI optimization is extra technical work: an llms.txt file, special AI schema, or new markup written for machines. Google’s documentation says you don’t need any of it. Its guide to AI features in Search states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” The same page says you don’t need new machine-readable files or AI text files, and that there’s no special schema.org structured data to add.
For a dental practice, GEO is the SEO work your site already needs, plus two things a rankings report doesn’t show you. The first is what each assistant actually says about your practice. The second is whether the facts about you are complete and consistent everywhere those assistants read.
| Dental SEO | GEO for dentists | |
|---|---|---|
| What you’re trying to win | A high position in Google’s results and map listings | A place on the short list an AI assistant writes back |
| Where patients see it | Google Search and Google Maps | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| What gets measured | Rankings, traffic and calls from search | Whether each assistant names your practice, and which sources it cites |
| What it depends on | A crawlable site, relevant pages, links and your Google Business Profile | All of that, plus complete, matching details across your site and directories |
GEO isn’t the right first step for every practice. If you’re booked months out and turning new patients away, your limit is chair time, and more visibility won’t change that yet.
What happened when we asked three AI assistants to recommend a dentist
On September 18, 2026, we gave ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same request, with web search turned on for each: “Can you recommend a good family dentist in Charlotte, North Carolina? I need someone taking new patients.” All three answered with real practices. They didn’t use the same sources to decide who to name.
| AI assistant | Practices named | What it cited |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 9 | Only the practices’ own websites |
| Gemini | 12 | A third-party directory, toprateddentist.com, six times, plus practice websites |
| Perplexity | 6 | 16 sources, mostly practice websites, plus Zocdoc and Delta Dental’s find-a-dentist tool |
ChatGPT repeated details it found on those websites, including one practice’s new-patient exam price and another’s early appointments starting at 7:30 in the morning. Perplexity copied street addresses and phone numbers from the Zocdoc and Delta Dental listings word for word.
That was one request in one city on one day, so it shows how the three assistants behaved that day rather than a rule they always follow. The pattern still tells you what to fix. Your website has to spell out your services, hours and new-patient details in plain text, and good dental website design makes that easier for an assistant to read. Your directory listings have to say the same thing your site does.
"AI tools recommend the practice they can describe with confidence. If your hours, providers and services are missing or don’t match across your site and directories, ChatGPT names someone else."

What sets DDSRank apart for GEO?
GEO built only for dental practices
We work only with dental practices, from general dentists to orthodontists, periodontists and pediatric dentists. We already know the questions patients put to an assistant, from implant consults to emergency appointments, and we write your pages to answer them.
Built on the SEO your practice already needs
Every assistant in our test found practice websites through ordinary web search. If a page can’t be crawled or indexed, no AI work will reach it. That’s why our GEO work builds on dental SEO: technical fixes, metadata, internal links and your Google Business Profile.
We report what AI says about you, not just where you rank
Your monthly report covers AI visibility alongside your rankings, so you can see whether the assistants are naming your practice for the questions your patients ask.
We work for you, not your competition
Plenty of agencies will sign three competing practices in the same city. When they do, they’re working against you as hard as they’re working for you. We work with one practice per specialty in each market. If we take you on as a client, we won’t take a competing practice in your area, and we’ll clear it with you before signing anyone nearby.
A free dental website analysis
We’ll review your website by hand, compare it with the practices you compete with, and tell you what’s holding it back and what to fix first. There’s no automated scan and no cost.
DIY guide to GEO for dentists
6-step action plan for getting your practice named by AI
- Check what each assistant says about you. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and type the question a patient would type, with your city in it. Write down which practices come back and which sources each assistant lists. Repeat it every month.
- Describe every service in full sentences. A services grid with a few words per item gives an assistant nothing to repeat. Give each service a real description on your own site.
- Give new patients their own page. Put what a first visit costs, which insurance you accept and how soon you can see someone on one page, in plain text.
- Make your details match everywhere. Check that your practice name, address, phone number, hours and providers are the same on your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing you can find.
- Keep your Google Business Profile current. Update hours, services and photos, and reply to reviews. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through each setting.
- Fix the fundamentals before anything AI-specific. Make sure every page can be crawled and indexed, loads quickly on a phone and has a clear title. Every assistant in our test reached practice websites through search, so a page search can’t read is a page AI can’t read either.
Frequently asked questions about GEO for dentists
What is GEO for dentists?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your practice named when patients ask an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode to recommend a dentist. It combines ordinary SEO with checking what each assistant says about you and making your practice details complete and consistent.
Is GEO different from dental SEO?
GEO builds on dental SEO rather than replacing it. Both depend on a website search engines can crawl and understand. The difference is what you measure: SEO tracks your position in Google’s results, while GEO tracks whether each AI assistant names your practice and which sources it cites to do it.
Does ChatGPT recommend specific dentists by name?
Yes. When we asked it for a family dentist in Charlotte taking new patients, ChatGPT named nine practices and cited each one’s own website. It also repeated details from those sites, such as a new-patient exam price and an early appointment time, so what your site says in plain text matters.
Do I need an llms.txt file or special AI schema?
No. Google’s documentation on AI features in Search says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you don’t need new AI text files or special structured data. Your time is better spent on complete, accurate pages and listings.
How do I know if AI is recommending my practice?
Ask it the way a patient would. Type “recommend a family dentist in [your city] taking new patients” into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, then note who’s named and which sources are listed. Repeat it monthly, or have us track it for you in your monthly report.
How long does GEO take to work?
Nobody has published a reliable figure yet. The assistants reach practice websites through ordinary search, so the site and listing work that improves local search is also what they read. Your monthly report shows whether and when the assistants start naming you.
GEO for dentists recap
AI assistants already recommend dental practices by name, and each one reads different sources to choose them. GEO for dentists is the work of making your practice easy for all of them to describe: clear pages on your own site, matching details in every directory, and a monthly check on what the assistants actually say.
